Lunges to Biceps Curls to Shoulder Press
This three-part complex chains a dumbbell lunge, a biceps curl at the bottom, and a shoulder press on the way up — one flowing rep that trains legs, arms, and shoulders while the heart rate climbs. It suits time-pressed full-body sessions where efficiency outranks isolation. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Intermediate — three patterns must each already be clean before they are chained.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Step into the lunge with dumbbells hanging at your sides.
- At the bottom of the lunge, curl both dumbbells to the shoulders with still elbows.
- Drive up through the front heel and press the dumbbells overhead as you rise.
- Lower the weights back to your sides fully before the next step — no half resets.
- Alternate the leading leg every rep to share the balance work.
Breathing: Inhale into the lunge, exhale through the curl, breathe again, exhale on the press.

Common questions
Are combination exercises like this actually effective?
For their real purpose, yes: density and conditioning. You move more total muscle per minute than any isolation work allows, which suits fat-loss phases and short sessions. What they cannot do is maximally load any single muscle — the weakest link sets the weight for everyone.
What weight should I use for this complex?
The biceps curl decides — choose dumbbells you could strictly curl for about twelve reps, which typically lands the lunge and press comfortably within range. When that weight stops challenging the legs at all, program separate heavy lunges elsewhere rather than forcing the complex heavier.
Curl at the bottom or while stepping — does the order matter?
Curling in the held bottom position is deliberate: the lunge is stable, the legs rest under stretch, and the curl gets honest strict form. Curling mid-step blends momentum into everything and doubles the balance error rate. Distinct phases, distinct quality — that is the design.
