Lunges to Biceps Curls
This two-part combo performs a biceps curl in the held bottom of every lunge, letting the legs work isometrically while the arms move. It packs lower-body tension and arm volume into a single dumbbell movement — a staple of efficient home full-body circuits. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Intermediate — the isometric lunge hold under a moving load is the hidden difficulty.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Step into a stable lunge, both dumbbells hanging long at your sides.
- Settle the bottom position — back knee hovering or lightly touching, front shin vertical.
- Curl both dumbbells to the shoulders with elbows pinned to your ribs.
- Lower the weights fully, then drive up through the front heel to stand.
- Alternate legs each rep so the isometric hold is shared evenly.
Breathing: Breathe in settling into the lunge, out through the curl, and out again on the stand-up drive.

Common questions
Why curl in the bottom of a lunge instead of standing?
Two reasons: the deep lunge keeps the legs under isometric tension for the entire curl, and the wide split base actually stabilises the torso better than a standing curl sway. You bank extra leg time-under-tension at zero time cost — the whole appeal of the pairing.
Does the leg hold weaken my curl performance?
Slightly — divided attention and overall fatigue trim a little off what you would strictly curl fresh. That trade is intentional: the combo optimises total work per minute, not peak biceps load. Keep one separate strict-curl slot in the week if arm strength is a specific goal.
How is this different from the version with the shoulder press?
This is the simpler sibling — lunge plus curl, with the weights returning down before you stand. Adding the overhead press turns it into a three-stage complex with more shoulder work and higher balance demands. Master this pairing first; the press bolts on cleanly later.
