Dumbbell Lunges
The dumbbell lunge loads the classic split-stance pattern with a weight in each hand, turning a balance exercise into a genuine strength builder for the quads and glutes. It is the natural next chapter once bodyweight lunges stop asking hard questions. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Intermediate
Intermediate — the load tests the same old pattern; nothing about the geometry changes.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Hold the dumbbells at arm's length by your sides, shoulders back, grip relaxed but full.
- Step forward into your practised lunge distance — load changes nothing about geometry.
- Lower the back knee toward the floor with the torso tall, weights hanging plumb.
- Drive up through the front heel without shrugging or swinging the dumbbells.
- Keep the shoulders level; do not let the weights tip you toward one side.
Breathing: Inhale down, strong exhale up; re-grip and re-breathe between reps as needed.

Common questions
Dumbbells or a barbell for loaded lunges?
Dumbbells sit low and by the sides, keeping the balance demand modest and the exit easy — just set them down. A barbell on the back raises the load's centre of gravity, demanding much more stability for the same weight. Build a strong dumbbell lunge first; the bar can wait.
My grip gives out before my legs — what now?
Common, and worth training through partly: loaded carries and time build grip fast. In the meantime, use straps for top sets, split the reps into shorter clusters, or hold a single heavier dumbbell at the chest (goblet style), which shifts the limit back to the legs.
How much weight should I add to lunges?
Start with a pair of dumbbells totalling roughly a quarter of what you would goblet squat comfortably, and let form make the decision: the step length, upright torso, and quiet knee must all survive. Progress in the smallest jumps your gym allows — single-leg work punishes big leaps.
