High Plank Pass Through

From a high plank you lift one hand and sweep it underneath the torso toward the opposite side, then re-plant and alternate. Every pass removes a support point and dares the trunk to rotate — your job is to refuse. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner

Intermediate — square shoulders outrank reach depth; progress stance width before speed.

Proper form — 5 cues

  1. Split the feet wider than the mat to buy stability before the first pass.
  2. Shift weight subtly into the planted arm as the other hand releases.
  3. Thread the moving hand under the chest toward the opposite hip.
  4. Keep the hips level through every pass — no see-sawing.
  5. Re-stack the returning hand under its shoulder before the next rep begins.

Breathing: Exhale on each sweep across, inhale as the hand re-plants.

The 3 mistakes Maddy corrects most

Twisting the chest open to chase a deeper reach. Rotation is the failure condition here — the deeper twisted reach trains mobility, not anti-rotation control. Fix: Reach only as far as the shoulders can stay square, and grow the distance over sessions.
Sagging through the supporting shoulder. Sinking between the shoulder blades loads passive tissue and warns of a collapsing base. Fix: Push the planted hand through the floor so the upper back stays domed.
Feet narrowing between sets. A slimmer base quietly raises the difficulty mid-workout, and form breaks before you notice why. Fix: Mark the foot positions and reset them at the start of every set.

Common questions

What muscles does the plank pass-through target?

The obliques and the deep trunk wall do the defining work — resisting the rotation each released hand invites — while the supporting shoulder, chest and serratus stabilise a moving load. The glutes hold the pelvis level. It reads as an arm movement on camera, but the trunk is where the effort concentrates.

Can I hold a small weight in the passing hand?

Yes, and it is the natural progression: sliding or passing a light dumbbell under the torso adds load to the anti-rotation demand. Earn it first — the unweighted version with level hips and a narrow stance is the prerequisite. Add the object before adding speed; velocity is the last dial to turn.

How is this different from plank shoulder taps?

Direction of the reach. Taps bring the hand up to the opposite shoulder over a short path; the pass-through sends it underneath the body across the midline, a longer sweep that pulls the centre of gravity further off-axis. The pass-through is generally the harder of the pair — taps make an ideal preparatory step.
