High Plank Rotation

From a high plank you peel one arm off the floor and rotate the whole body open into a side-plank reach, arm pointing at the ceiling, then return and alternate. It links pushing stability with rotary control through a big, honest range. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner

Intermediate — the transition, not the end position, is what you are training; slow is the standard.

Proper form — 5 cues

  1. Let the feet pivot onto their edges as the body opens to the side.
  2. Follow the top hand with your eyes to steer the rotation.
  3. Stack the top shoulder directly above the planted wrist at the finish.
  4. Keep the hips high through the turn — sagging mid-rotation is the common leak.
  5. Take two counts out and two counts back; no flinging the arm.

Breathing: Inhale in the plank, exhale as you open into the reach, inhale returning.

The 3 mistakes Maddy corrects most

Hips dropping during the transition. The halfway point is where the trunk must hand off between front and side chains; a sag there marks the handoff failing. Fix: Lift the hips a touch higher than level before initiating each turn.
Planted hand drifting ahead of the shoulder. A forward hand under a rotating body cranks the supporting shoulder at its weakest angle. Fix: Re-stack wrist under shoulder every rep, and shorten the set when it wanders.
Spinning through with momentum to hit rep counts. A thrown rotation skips the mid-range where the obliques actually work hardest. Fix: Halve the reps and insert a one-second pause at the top of each reach.

Common questions

What is the plank rotation good for?

It trains the transition between two planes — front support and side support — which static planks never visit. The obliques control the turn, the shoulders stabilise a moving load, and the hips learn to stay tall mid-rotation. That mid-range control transfers to throwing, swinging and any sport with a twist.

My wrists ache when I rotate — any adjustment?

Rotation multiplies the torque through the planted wrist, so soreness here is common early on. Grip the floor with spread fingers, keep the wrist stacked under the shoulder, and shorten the sets. Rotating on a closed fist or a hexagonal dumbbell keeps the wrist neutral and usually resolves it while tolerance builds.

Plank rotation vs side plank — do I need both?

They complement rather than duplicate. The side plank builds endurance in the finished position; the rotation trains the journey there and back, which is harder to control and closer to how sport and life load the trunk. A balanced week can hold one static side hold and one rotational drill.
