Front Plank Taps (Modified)

From a kneeling high plank you reach one hand forward to tap the floor ahead, return it, and alternate sides. Each tap removes one of four supports, teaching the trunk to stay dead level — and the kneeling base keeps that demand honest but manageable. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner

Beginner — a stability drill graded by stillness, not by reps.

Proper form — 5 cues

  1. Plant the hands under the shoulders and the knees on the mat, body straight from knees to crown.
  2. Shift a little weight into the supporting arm before the other hand leaves the floor.
  3. Tap the floor about 20-30 cm ahead — a reach, not a lurch.
  4. Return the hand fully under its shoulder before the next side begins.
  5. Freeze the hips — an observer should see zero side-to-side rock.

Breathing: Exhale through each reach and tap, inhale as the hand returns to base.

The 3 mistakes Maddy corrects most

Rocking the pelvis toward the supporting side. Shifting the hips to make room for the reach is the exact compensation the drill is built to eliminate. Fix: Shorten the tap distance until the pelvis holds still, then earn the range back.
Tapping wide instead of forward. A sideways tap barely disturbs balance, so the trunk never faces the challenge the forward reach creates. Fix: Place an object directly ahead of each shoulder and aim every tap at it.
Speed-tapping through the set. Quick touches let momentum bridge the single-arm moment that the abs are supposed to own. Fix: Hold each tap for a full second before bringing the hand home.

Common questions

Plank taps or shoulder taps — what is the difference?

The target of the free hand. Shoulder taps bring the hand to the opposite shoulder, keeping the lever short; forward floor taps send the hand away from the body, lengthening the lever and pulling the centre of gravity forward. The forward version is slightly harder on the trunk and slightly easier on the wrist of the support arm.

What does this drill actually train?

Anti-rotation and weight-shift control — the ability to lose a support point without the body twisting. That skill underwrites push-ups, crawling, single-arm carries and everyday pushing tasks. The shoulders of the supporting arm and the deep trunk muscles do the measurable work; the tap itself is almost incidental.

When should I try the full-plank version?

Once you can complete ten slow taps per side from the knees with a pelvis that would not spill an imaginary cup of water. Move to the full plank with a wider foot stance at first — feet apart makes the transition fair — then narrow the feet over the following weeks as stability grows.
