Sphinx Pose to Plank (Modified)
This drill flows between sphinx pose and a knees-down forearm plank — front body long in one position, core braced in the next. Alternating stretch and tension teaches the trunk to switch on and off deliberately, which makes it a clever warm-up piece before core or full-body sessions. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner
Beginner flow — the knee-supported plank keeps every transition recoverable while the pattern is learned.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Start in sphinx: forearms down, chest lifted, hips resting
- Exhale, tuck the pelvis and brace the abs
- Draw the hips up into a straight knee-supported plank line
- Hold the plank for a breath, keeping elbows under shoulders
- Lower the hips with control back into the sphinx opening
Breathing: Exhale rising into the plank, inhale melting back into sphinx.

Common questions
What is the point of moving between sphinx and plank?
The two positions are opposites: sphinx lengthens the front body while the core rests, and plank shortens and braces it. Cycling between them trains the abs to engage from a stretched position — a switch-on skill that static planks alone never practice — while doubling as a spine-friendly warm-up.
Is this suitable for complete beginners?
Yes — the knees-down plank keeps the load modest, and the sphinx phase is a rest built into every rep. If the transition feels chaotic at first, pause one full breath in each position before moving. The flow smooths out quickly once the pelvis-first lifting pattern clicks.
When should I do sphinx-to-plank in my workout?
It works best early: as the second or third movement of a warm-up, after some gentle whole-body movement. Two or three rounds prime the abs and wake up the front-body stretch before squats, push-ups or core circuits. It also stands alone as a morning mobility-plus-activation minute.
