Shoulder Taps (Modified)
The modified shoulder tap runs the same opposite-shoulder touch from a knees-down plank, cutting the lever length and the rotation force roughly in half. It is the honest starting point for anyone whose hips swing in the full version — and a smart high-rep option late in a tough core circuit. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner
Entry-level core drill — graduating to the full plank version is the built-in progression.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Kneel and walk the hands out until shoulders stack over wrists
- Form one straight line from head through hips to knees
- Tuck the toes or rest the shoelaces down — whichever feels stable
- Lift one hand to the opposite shoulder without the hips dipping
- Alternate sides with a one-second pause at each touch
Breathing: Short exhale with every shoulder touch, easy inhale between taps.

Common questions
When should I move from modified to full shoulder taps?
When you can complete three sets of about fifteen taps per side from the knees with the hips perfectly quiet, you are ready to test the full plank version. Make the jump gradual — do the first few taps of each set from the toes, finish from the knees, and extend the toes portion week by week.
Do knee shoulder taps still work the core?
Yes — the anti-rotation demand is identical in kind, just smaller in magnitude because the lever is shorter. For a beginner it is exactly the right dose, and even experienced trainees use the knee version for high-rep finishing sets when the full plank position would collapse into bad form.
My wrists hurt during shoulder taps — what can I do?
First check that shoulders are stacked directly over wrists — hands drifting forward is the usual cause of wrist strain. Spreading the fingers and gripping the floor helps distribute pressure. If discomfort continues, place a folded mat under the heel of the hands or work on fists to keep the wrists neutral.
