Plank Front Tap
The plank front tap starts from a high plank and has you reach one hand forward to tap the floor ahead of you, forcing your trunk to resist rotation each time a support point disappears. It is a smart early anti-rotation drill for beginners who can hold a plank but have never trained the trunk against a shifting base. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Proper form — 5 cues
- Set a high plank with hands under shoulders and feet slightly wider than hips for a stable base.
- Shift your weight subtly onto one hand before the other hand leaves the floor.
- Reach the free hand forward and tap the floor about 15 to 20 centimetres ahead.
- Bring the hand straight back under the shoulder, then repeat with the other arm.
- Keep the belt line of your shorts level with the floor the entire time — no tilting or swaying.
Breathing: Exhale gently as each hand reaches forward, inhale as it returns — never hold your breath through the taps.

Common questions
Plank front tap vs shoulder taps — which is easier?
The front tap is generally the gentler entry. Reaching forward keeps the moving hand low and close to the floor, so the balance disturbance is smaller than lifting a hand all the way to the opposite shoulder. Most people build clean front taps first, then progress to shoulder taps, then to the push-up-plus-tap combinations.
Can beginners do plank front taps?
Yes, provided a basic high plank is already solid for around 30 seconds. If full planks are still shaky, do the same drill from an incline — hands on a bench or sturdy table — which reduces the load while teaching the identical weight-shift skill. From the incline, progress to the floor as the hips learn to stay quiet.
What are plank front taps actually for?
They train anti-rotation: the trunk's ability to stay still when one point of support disappears. That quality carries into single-arm carries, push-ups, throwing, and everyday moments like reaching across a table with something heavy. It also quietly strengthens the supporting shoulder, which has to stabilise extra load every time the other hand lifts.
