Hack Squats
The hack squat machine loads the shoulders through pads while your back rests against an angled sled, letting you squat deep with the spine supported. It is a quad-builder suited to intermediates who want heavy leg work without balancing a barbell. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Sets & reps by goal
| Goal | Sets × Reps | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 4-5 sets × 3-6 reps | 2-3 min |
| Muscle | 3-4 sets × 9-12 reps | 90 sec |
| Endurance | 2-3 sets × 18-27 reps | 45-60 sec |
Rep ranges per Helms 2014 · Schoenfeld 2016.
Level — Intermediate
Intermediate — the machine removes balance, not effort; full depth at modest load beats a loaded quarter squat.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Place the feet mid-platform at shoulder width, toes slightly out.
- Press the entire back — hips included — flat into the pad before releasing the handles.
- Lower until the thighs reach at least parallel with the platform.
- Drive through mid-foot and heel; the heels never peel off the plate.
- Stop just short of slamming the knees into lockout at the top.
Breathing: Inhale and brace at the top, ride the descent on the hold, exhale driving through the mid-foot.

Common questions
Hack squat vs barbell squat — which is better for quads?
The hack squat isolates the quads more per kilo because the sled removes the balance and trunk demands that cap a free squat. The barbell squat trains more total musculature and skills. Neither is universally better: many strong lifters use the barbell as the main lift and the hack squat as the dedicated quad-volume tool.
Should my knees travel past my toes on the hack squat?
Some forward travel is built into the machine's geometry and is not dangerous for healthy, progressively trained knees. What matters is smooth tracking without the heels lifting or the knees diving inward. If the depth-plus-travel combination irritates the kneecap area, raise the feet on the platform — the simplest fix available.
Where should I feel the hack squat working?
Front of the thighs first and foremost, glutes second, with a general lower-body fatigue by the last reps. Lower-back complaints are a red flag on this machine — they nearly always mean the hips are curling off the pad at depth, so shorten the range and retest before blaming the exercise.
