Jumping Squats
The jump squat turns the bodyweight squat explosive: sink, drive, leave the floor, land soft, repeat. It builds lower-body power and a serious conditioning effect in very few reps, and belongs with trainees who already squat well and land quietly. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Intermediate
Intermediate — you qualify by landing quietly, not by jumping high.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Sit into a half-to-parallel squat with the chest tall and heels down.
- Drive through the whole foot and swing the arms up to launch.
- Fully extend hips, knees, and ankles at takeoff — jump through the crown of your head.
- Land toes-first, then heels, folding immediately back into the next squat.
- Reset for a beat between reps if the landings start getting loud.
Breathing: Inhale on the descent, sharp exhale through takeoff, and re-breathe during the landing reset.

Common questions
Are jump squats safe for beginners?
They are filed intermediate for a reason: the landing is the exercise's real test. A beginner should first own 15 clean bodyweight squats and practise snap-down landing drills. Once landings are quiet and knees track well, low-rep jump squat sets become a reasonable next step.
Jump squats vs regular squats — what do jumps add?
Rate of force development — how fast you can produce force, not just how much. Regular squats build the strength base; jump squats teach the nervous system to express it quickly. Athletes and anyone chasing explosiveness benefit from both, in that order of priority.
How many jump squats per workout?
For power, keep total quality jumps modest — something like four sets of three to six with full recovery, done fresh, early in the session. For conditioning, higher-rep sets work, but only at submaximal heights with landings that stay soft from first rep to last.
