Leg Extension
The leg extension machine straightens the knee against a padded roller, isolating the quadriceps with no balance, hip, or trunk demands to share the work. It is the cleanest way to add quad volume after squats or to train the thighs when loading the spine is off the table. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Proper form — 5 cues
- Line the knee joint up with the machine's pivot and set the back pad so the thighs are fully supported.
- Place the roller on the front of the ankles, shins vertical at the start.
- Extend to a full, deliberate lockout — the last few degrees are where the quads finish the job.
- Pause and squeeze the thighs hard at the top for a full second.
- Lower under control through the complete arc; do not let the stack touch down between reps.
Breathing: Exhale through the extension and squeeze, inhale as the shins lower.

Common questions
Are leg extensions bad for the knees?
For healthy knees, controlled extensions through a pain-free range are a standard, well-tolerated quad exercise — the machine exists in rehabilitation settings for a reason. Problems come from jerky reps, excessive loads, or training through sharp pain. If you have an existing knee condition, range and load should follow professional guidance.
Leg extensions vs squats for quad growth?
Squats load more total muscle and build strength that transfers broadly; extensions isolate the quads and load the fully-shortened position squats never reach. They are teammates: squat-pattern work as the base, extensions as targeted extra volume — especially for the teardrop region above the knee.
Should my toes point up, in, or out?
Keep the ankles roughly neutral with toes pointing up; the small in-or-out rotations sometimes recommended to target individual quad heads make marginal difference and can twist the knee under load. Consistent full range and progressive loading matter enormously more than toe angle.
