The range: weight = BMI × height (m)². The WHO healthy band runs BMI 18.5–24.9 (WHO 2000); the WHO expert consultation on Asian populations flagged BMI 23 as an added action point, giving a tighter 18.5–22.9 reference band shown above (Lancet 2004).
Why not one number? The classic single-number "ideal weight" equations (Devine and others) were built in the 1970s for estimating drug doses — not as health targets — and were never validated for that use (Pai & Paloucek 2000). Any tool that hands you one exact "ideal" kilogram figure is dressing a dosing shortcut up as a goal.
Where you should sit inside the range depends on muscle mass, frame and training history — a lifter can sit above the band with excellent health markers, and composition matters more than the scale.
