Skipping

Skipping — jumping rope — is rhythmical low-height bouncing over a turning rope, driven by the calves with the wrists spinning the handles. Cheap, portable and scalable from warm-up to serious conditioning, it also trains footwork, timing and posture in a way few cardio tools match. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner

Beginner-friendly once the timing clicks — expect a clumsy first week while the rhythm installs itself.

Proper form — 5 cues

  1. Elbows close to the ribs; the wrists, not the arms, turn the rope
  2. Jump just 2–5 centimetres — barely enough to clear the rope
  3. Land on the balls of the feet with soft knees
  4. Keep the gaze forward and the chest tall
  5. Find a steady rhythm before chasing speed

Breathing: Relaxed rhythmic breathing matched to the bounce — if you cannot speak a short phrase, ease the pace.

The 3 mistakes Maddy corrects most

Jumping too high on every turn. Big jumps waste energy, break rhythm, and multiply the landing load on the calves and shins. Fix: Practice low bounces without the rope first — a few centimetres of height is all the rope needs.
Swinging the rope from the shoulders. Wide arm circles pull the rope's arc out of shape, causing catches at the feet and early shoulder fatigue. Fix: Pin the elbows near the ribs and turn the handles with small wrist circles.
Landing flat on the heels. Heel landings send impact straight up the leg and make the rebound between jumps impossible. Fix: Stay on the balls of the feet with heels kissing the floor lightly, letting the calves act as springs.

Common questions

Is skipping a good way to lose fat?

It can contribute strongly, because it burns energy at a high rate for its simplicity and is easy to slot into short daily sessions. Fat loss itself still depends on your overall calorie balance across weeks — skipping is an efficient engine, and nutrition decides the destination.

How long should a beginner skip for?

Start with intervals, not marathons: 20 to 30 seconds of skipping, equal rest, repeated for five to ten rounds. Calves and the tissue around the shins need weeks to adapt to the bouncing, so build total time gradually and skip on a forgiving surface rather than bare concrete.

What rope length is right for me?

Stand on the middle of the rope with one foot — the handles should reach somewhere between your lower ribs and armpits. Too long and the rope drags the floor ahead of your feet; too short and you will hunch to clear it. Adjustable ropes make dialing this in easy.
