Shrugs
The dumbbell shrug lifts the shoulders straight up toward the ears against a dead-hanging load, isolating the upper trapezius. It builds the neck-to-shoulder slope that shirts hang from and strengthens a muscle that carries bags, deadlifts and daily posture more than most people realise. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner
Technically simple — the discipline is resisting heavy weights that shrink the range of motion.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Stand tall with dumbbells hanging at your sides, palms facing in
- Pull the shoulders straight up toward the ears — vertical, not backward
- Squeeze hard at the top for a full second
- Lower slowly until the traps reach a comfortable stretch
- Keep the arms relaxed and straight — they are hooks, not lifters
Breathing: Exhale as the shoulders rise, inhale on the slow lower.

Common questions
Do shrugs build a bigger neck or bigger traps?
Shrugs target the upper trapezius — the muscle running from the base of the skull out to the shoulders — so they thicken the slope between neck and shoulder rather than the neck itself. Because that slope frames the neck, the whole area looks more developed as the traps grow.
Should I do shrugs with dumbbells or a barbell?
Dumbbells let the arms hang at your sides so the shoulders lift in a natural vertical line, and each side works independently. A barbell sits in front of the thighs, which suits heavier total loads but pulls the shoulders slightly forward. For most trainees, dumbbells are the more comfortable default.
How many times a week can I train shrugs?
The upper traps recover fast, so two or three sessions per week works well when the volume per session is modest — around three or four working sets. They also receive indirect work from deadlifts, carries and rows, so factor those in before stacking extra shrug days on top.
