Shoulder Press Machine
The machine shoulder press guides two handles along a fixed overhead path, letting you load the delts and triceps without balancing free weights. It is the right tool for absolute beginners learning the overhead pattern and for experienced lifters pushing safely close to failure at the end of a session. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner
The most beginner-proof overhead press in the gym — path and balance are handled for you.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Adjust the seat so the handles start level with the top of your shoulders
- Plant the feet, press the lower back lightly into the pad
- Grip the handles with wrists neutral and drive straight up
- Reach full arm extension without the shoulders shrugging into the ears
- Lower for a slow two-count until the elbows reach roughly 90 degrees
Breathing: Exhale on the drive upward, inhale as the handles descend.

Common questions
Is the machine shoulder press as effective as dumbbells?
For the delts themselves, it is highly effective — the fixed path removes the balance demand so you can concentrate purely on pressing hard. What you lose is the stabilizer and trunk work free weights provide. A sound long-term approach uses both: dumbbells to build the pattern, the machine to push volume safely.
Why can I press more on the machine than with dumbbells?
The machine balances the load for you. With dumbbells, a meaningful slice of your effort goes into stopping the weights drifting in every direction; on the machine that entire slice goes into the press. A gap of 20–30 percent between the two is completely normal and not a problem to fix.
Should the handles touch my shoulders at the bottom?
Not necessarily. Lowering until the elbows reach about 90 degrees gives most people a productive stretch without irritating the shoulder capsule. If you have long arms or cranky shoulders, stopping slightly higher is a legitimate choice — full range is the range you can control without pain.
