Lateral Raises
This gym-floor variation of the dumbbell lateral raise trades home minimalism for the rack's fine weight jumps and the option of strict seated or braced positions. Same target — the medial deltoid — with more tools for controlling cheat and progressing in small increments. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner
Beginner movement, lifetime discipline — the rack's small jumps are the progression tool.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Pick a dumbbell pair you could raise strictly for at least eight reps — the rack will tempt you higher.
- Brace the trunk, soften the knees, and fix a slight elbow bend before the first rep.
- Raise out and slightly forward — about 20–30 degrees in front of the body's plane — to sit in the delt's natural line.
- Pause briefly at shoulder height; the top should feel earned, not thrown.
- Control the descent slower than the lift; resist the rack-room habit of dropping reps.
Breathing: Breathe out through the raise, in through the three-second descent.

Common questions
Seated or standing lateral raises — which is stricter?
Seated against an upright pad removes the hips and knees from the equation entirely, making cheating nearly impossible; standing allows a whisper of body English that can help finish hard sets. A useful pattern: seated to learn and recalibrate, standing for most working volume.
How heavy should lateral raises ever get?
Heavier over months, yes — but this exercise rewards patience like few others. Most lifters build impressive side delts in the 8–15 strict rep range with weights that look humble. When a set requires a lean, a bounce, or shrugging, the load has outrun the purpose.
Are machine or cable raises better than dumbbells?
Cables load the delt evenly through the whole arc, including the bottom third where dumbbells provide almost nothing, and machines lock the path for pure effort. Dumbbells demand more stabilisation and are always available. All three work; rotating them across blocks covers each one's blind spot.
