Deadlift to Shoulder Press
The dumbbell deadlift to shoulder press chains two lifts into one long rep: hinge and pull the weights up, then drive them overhead, then reverse. Working half the body's biggest muscles in sequence, it is a time-efficient full-body builder and a staple of compact home-dumbbell sessions. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Intermediate
Intermediate — both the hinge and the strict press should be clean on their own before they merge.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Hinge with a flat back and grip the dumbbells at mid-shin, arms long.
- Stand fully tall — hips locked out — before the weights start rising.
- Curl-free path: pull the bells to the shoulders in one clean sweep.
- Press straight overhead until the elbows lock beside your ears.
- Reverse in order: shoulders, then hips, lowering the bells back to mid-shin.
Breathing: Inhale in the hinge, exhale driving overhead; reset the breath at the standing checkpoint each rep.

Common questions
What muscles does the deadlift to press combination work?
The hinge phase loads the glutes, hamstrings, and spinal erectors; the press phase hands over to the shoulders, upper chest, and triceps, while the trunk braces through the exchange. Across one rep, that is most of the body's large muscle groups — the reason combo lifts dominate short, equipment-light sessions.
Is this a good fat-loss exercise?
It is a good calorie-expensive exercise — long reps, big muscles, elevated heart rate — which makes workouts more productive per minute. But no single movement drives fat loss by itself; that outcome belongs to overall training volume plus a sustained calorie deficit. Use combos like this to make sessions denser, not as a magic bullet.
What weight should I choose for combo lifts?
Your press decides. The hinge portion could handle far more than your shoulders can press, so pick dumbbells that make the overhead phase hard but crisp — for most people that is well under their deadlift-only weight. When the press turns into a push-jump or a back-bend, the combo has outrun the weakest link.
