Barbell Biceps Curl
The barbell biceps curl loads both arms on one fixed bar, making it the simplest way to progressively overload the biceps with real weight. It rewards strict positions — pinned elbows, still torso — and exposes anyone trying to lift with their lower back instead. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner
Beginner-friendly in pattern, but strictness is the actual skill being trained.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Grip the bar about shoulder-width, palms up, and stand with a soft bend in the knees.
- Glue your elbows to your ribs — they are hinges, not passengers.
- Curl the bar in an arc toward your collarbones without the elbows travelling forward.
- Squeeze hard for one second at the top of every rep.
- Lower on a 3-second count until the elbows reach full extension.
Breathing: Exhale as you curl up, inhale on the 3-second lower.

Common questions
Barbell curls or dumbbell curls — which is better for growth?
The barbell lets you load heavier and progress in smaller, steadier jumps, which is why it anchors most arm programs. Dumbbells allow each wrist to rotate freely and expose left-right imbalances. The productive answer is a barbell curl as your main loaded movement, with dumbbell work as the accessory — or rotating blocks of each.
Why do my wrists or forearms hurt during barbell curls?
A straight bar locks your wrists into full palm-up rotation, which some forearms tolerate poorly. First check your grip width — hands forced too wide or too narrow strain the wrists. If pain persists at every width, an EZ-curl bar's angled grips usually solves it while training the same muscles.
How much weight should I barbell curl?
Whatever allows 8–12 reps with zero body swing — for most beginners that is a 10–20 kg bar total, and that is a legitimate starting point. The biceps are small muscles; they grow from strict tension and steady weekly progression, not from the number printed on the plates.
