Seated Leg Wipers (Advanced)

From a reclined seated balance with both legs extended and hovering, you sweep the legs side to side like windscreen wipers, the obliques braking and steering the arc at both ends. It is a demanding rotational-control exercise for trainees who have already mastered hovering in-and-outs and low scissors. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Advanced

Advanced — combines a hovering balance with rotational braking; the modified bent-knee version is the sensible rehearsal.

Proper form — 5 cues

  1. Balance on the sit bones, torso reclined, both legs extended and hovering together.
  2. Plant the hands lightly beside the hips or hover them for full difficulty.
  3. Sweep both legs to one side in a controlled arc, keeping them glued together.
  4. Brake the sweep before the legs touch down, pause, and sweep to the far side.
  5. Keep the chest facing forward throughout — the legs travel, the torso refuses to.

Breathing: Exhale through each sweep, inhale at the end-range pause before reversing direction.

The 3 mistakes Maddy corrects most

Torso rotates along with the legs.. If the shoulders follow the sweep, the obliques never resist anything — the whole body just rocks side to side as one lazy unit. Fix: Fix your eyes and breastbone on a point ahead and shrink the sweep until the shoulders can stay square.
Legs crash toward the floor at the end of each arc.. Losing the brake means momentum, not muscle, finishes the sweep — and the obliques' hardest job, decelerating, goes untrained. Fix: Cut the arc's width by a third and add a one-second freeze at each end before reversing.
Legs drift apart mid-sweep.. Separated legs let each hip take a different path, muddying the single lever the obliques are meant to control. Fix: Squeeze a cushion or rolled towel between the knees or ankles until moving them as one unit is automatic.

Common questions

How do leg wipers differ from Russian twists?

They are mirror images. In a Russian twist the torso rotates over anchored legs; in leg wipers the torso holds still while the legs swing — so the obliques work to prevent rotation rather than produce it. That braking role is closer to what the trunk does in running and lifting, which is why wipers are often the more transferable of the pair.

What should I master before attempting advanced leg wipers?

Three prerequisites make the difference: seated in-and-outs with a full hover for 12 clean reps, scissors at a low leg angle with a flat back for 30 seconds, and Russian twists with genuine shoulder turn. Together they prove the hover balance, the leg-lever control, and the rotational awareness this exercise combines. Missing one usually shows up as a crashed sweep.

Can I do leg wipers lying down instead of seated?

Yes — the lying version, with your back on the floor and arms out wide for support, is the more common gym variant and slightly easier because the floor stabilises the torso. The seated hover version removes that support, adding a balance layer on top of the rotation control. Learn lying wipers first; graduate to seated when the floor version stops being a challenge.
