Seated Chest Press Straight Grip

The straight-grip seated chest press replicates the barbell bench pattern on a guided machine — palms down, elbows out at a moderate angle, pressing horizontal handles away from the mid-chest. It lets you load the pecs, front delts, and triceps hard without a spotter, which makes it a cornerstone for solo gym-goers. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner

Beginner — the guided path makes hard, safe pressing accessible from day one; setup precision is the skill.

Proper form — 5 cues

  1. Set the seat so the handles line up with your mid-chest, feet planted on the floor.
  2. Take the horizontal grip with wrists stacked straight over the forearms.
  3. Set the shoulder blades back and down and keep your head against the pad.
  4. Drive the handles away until the elbows fully extend, chest leading the push.
  5. Lower under a three-second count to a comfortable chest stretch, then press again.

Breathing: Inhale on the controlled return toward the chest, exhale as you drive the handles out.

The 3 mistakes Maddy corrects most

Elbows flared level with the shoulders.. A 90-degree flare on a fixed machine path puts the shoulder joint in its most vulnerable pressing position rep after rep. Fix: Let the elbows ride at roughly 45 degrees below shoulder line — if the machine's path forces the flare, adjust the seat or choose the hammer-grip station.
Wrists bent back under the load.. A collapsed wrist leaks pressing force and concentrates strain in a joint that gains nothing from the exercise. Fix: Stack knuckles over wrist over elbow, and grip the handle lower in the palm so the bones line up.
Arching and lifting the hips off the seat to press more weight.. Bridging on a machine bypasses the chest's hardest range while adding lower-back extension the seat was meant to remove. Fix: Keep hips and upper back in contact with the pads all set — if the weight only moves with a bridge, it is the wrong weight.

Common questions

Can I build a big chest using only the seated chest press?

You can build substantial pressing muscle with it — the machine loads the chest through its main function and allows safe hard sets close to failure. For more complete development, pair it with a fly movement for the stretched squeeze and, when available, an incline press for the upper fibres. One machine covers the core; two or three movements cover the map.

How is the straight grip different from the hammer grip version?

The palms-down grip sets the elbows wider, mirroring a barbell bench and giving the chest a familiar line of push, while the hammer grip tucks the elbows and shares more with the triceps. Neither is superior for growth; the straight grip is the default for healthy shoulders, and the neutral option exists precisely for the shoulders that disagree.

Should the handles touch my chest at the bottom of each rep?

Only if your shoulders allow it comfortably. Machines fix the path, so the right depth is the deepest point where you feel a chest stretch with zero front-of-shoulder pinch — for many people that is just short of the machine's full range. Some stations have a range limiter; set it to your depth rather than the machine's maximum.
