Pushups to Shoulder Taps
This combination performs a full push-up, then taps each shoulder with the opposite hand before the next rep, stacking anti-rotation trunk work on top of the press. It suits intermediate trainees who can already do clean push-ups and want one movement that trains pressing and single-arm stability together. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.
Muscles worked
Sets & reps by goal
| Goal | Sets × Reps | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 4 sets x 3-6 reps (1 rep = press + both taps) | 2-3 min |
| Muscle | 3 sets x 9-12 reps | 60-90 sec |
| Endurance | 2-3 sets x 18-27 reps or 40-60 sec continuous | 30-45 sec |
Level — Intermediate
Intermediate — the press is standard, but the taps expose any trunk weakness the push-up was hiding.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Set your push-up stance with feet wider than usual — the taps need the bigger base.
- Perform one full push-up, chest to within a fist of the floor.
- At the top, shift weight subtly to one arm and tap the opposite shoulder.
- Tap the other shoulder with the same stillness, hips level as a tabletop.
- Re-set your line, then begin the next push-up — one press, two taps, repeat.
Breathing: Inhale down, exhale up on the press, then breathe steadily through both taps — never hold air through the whole sequence.

Common questions
What do shoulder taps add to a normal push-up?
A single-arm moment. Every tap removes one of your four supports, so the trunk must resist tipping and twisting while one shoulder briefly carries double duty. That anti-rotation demand is something the standard push-up never provides, and it transfers to any activity where force comes off one arm — throwing, carrying, grappling, or simply catching yourself.
How many push-ups should I manage before adding taps?
A reasonable gate is 10 strict full-range push-ups plus a 30-second plank with level hips. The taps punish weak trunks immediately — if hips swivel on your first attempts, the base is not ready. Build the two prerequisites separately, or start with the modified knee version of this combination, and the full movement arrives quickly.
Why do my hips swing during the taps even though my push-up is solid?
Because pressing strength and anti-rotation control are different qualities — a strong chest does not automatically buy you a quiet pelvis on three points of support. Widen your feet, slow the taps, and squeeze the glute on the side of the lifted hand. The swing usually disappears within a couple of weeks of deliberate practice.
