Incline Pushups

The incline push-up raises your hands onto a bench, box, or wall to shrink the share of bodyweight you press, making it the standard entry point into push-up training. It suits absolute beginners, high-rep finishers, and anyone rebuilding pressing volume after time away. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner

Beginner — the incline height is a dial; lower it as strength arrives.

Proper form — 5 cues

  1. Place hands on a stable surface slightly wider than the shoulders, arms straight.
  2. Walk the feet back until the body forms one rigid line from head to heels.
  3. Lower the chest to the edge of the surface with elbows tracking about 45° from the torso.
  4. Press away to full lockout, letting the shoulder blades spread at the top.
  5. Keep glutes and abs switched on — the incline changes the load, not the plank standard.

Breathing: Inhale down to the edge, exhale on the press away — same rhythm you will keep on the floor.

The 3 mistakes Maddy corrects most

Hips sagging toward the surface. The easier angle tempts people to relax the trunk, which trains a broken position. Fix: Brace as strictly as you would on the floor; the plank line is non-negotiable.
Hands set too high to ever progress. Staying at a comfortable height forever means the stimulus stops changing. Fix: Drop to a lower surface once you can do about 15 clean reps at the current one.
Neck craning toward the surface. Leading with the chin fakes range while the chest stops well short. Fix: Keep the head neutral and touch the chest, not the face, to the edge.

Common questions

Are incline push-ups effective or just an easy version?

They are the same movement with a measured slice taken off the load — pressing mechanics, plank demand, and muscle recruitment all remain. For a beginner they are the most effective version, because they allow full range and honest reps. The dilution only matters once floor push-ups become comfortable.

How high should the incline be?

High enough that you can complete 8–10 strict reps, low enough that the last two are hard. A kitchen counter, a sturdy chair back, a bench, then a low step is a typical descent over weeks. Each drop in height is a genuine progression, the same way adding plates is.

How do I progress from incline to floor push-ups?

Work down through progressively lower surfaces, and when you can manage about 12–15 clean reps on a low step, test floor reps at the start of a fresh set. Mix them — floor reps first, incline reps to finish the set — until the whole set lives on the floor.
