Mountain Climbers
Mountain climbers run the knees toward the chest from a high-plank position, one after another, blending core stability with sprint-like conditioning. They earn their place in nearly every circuit because they punish a sagging plank and a lazy pace equally. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner
Beginner-accessible, with a ceiling as high as your sprint pace and plank discipline.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Set a strict high plank — hands under shoulders, one line from head to heels.
- Drive one knee toward the chest, then swap legs in a running rhythm.
- Keep the hips level with the shoulders — no piking up as the pace rises.
- Land the balls of the feet quietly under the body each cycle.
- Push the floor away continuously; the shoulders stay tall, never sinking.
Breathing: Rhythmic and continuous — exhale every two to four knee drives; held breath ends planks early.

Common questions
Are mountain climbers cardio or core work?
Both, in proportions you control. Driven fast, they behave like sprint conditioning with the plank as a tax in the background; performed slow and deep, they become a moving-plank core drill with modest cardio. Decide the intent per set — pace for the lungs, strictness for the trunk.
How fast should mountain climbers be?
Only as fast as the plank survives. The moment hips pike or bounce, extra speed is buying worse exercise. Most people do their best work at a controlled running rhythm — quick but even — reserving genuine sprint bursts for short intervals of fifteen to twenty seconds.
My wrists ache during long sets — any fixes?
Spread the fingers, grip the floor, and keep shoulders stacked directly above the hands rather than drifting forward. Breaking one long set into several shorter ones helps while tolerance builds. Fists on a mat, push-up handles, or an elevated hands position all reduce wrist extension too.
