Knee Taps

Knee taps are a standing cardio drill where each rising knee is met by the opposite hand tapping it at hip height, keeping the mind and heart rate engaged at once. The hand target keeps lift height honest, which is why coaches use it with beginners who shrink their marches. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner

Beginner — the palm target self-polices form, making it hard to do badly.

Proper form — 5 cues

  1. Hold both palms at hip height in front of you as fixed targets.
  2. Lift each knee to tap the opposite palm — hand stays still, knee travels.
  3. Stay tall through the spine; the tap happens out in front, not under a hunched chest.
  4. Alternate in a smooth, even beat, feet landing softly under the hips.
  5. Speed up only as long as every tap still lands crisply.

Breathing: Relaxed and rhythmic, one breath per few taps; growing breathlessness sets the interval length.

The 3 mistakes Maddy corrects most

Dropping the hands to meet a lazy knee. The target quietly lowers and the drill loses the very standard it exists to hold. Fix: Anchor the palms at hip-crease height and make the knee do the travelling.
Twisting the torso into each tap. Excess rotation wobbles the balance and turns a clean march into a wiggle. Fix: Keep shoulders square to the front; only the arm reaches slightly across.
Bouncing on a rigid support leg. A locked stance knee takes the rhythm's impact straight through the joint. Fix: Keep a soft bend in the standing leg at every beat.

Common questions

What is the point of tapping the knee?

The tap is a built-in quality check. Marching drills degrade invisibly — knees drift lower as fatigue builds — but a fixed palm target makes any shortfall obvious immediately. The cross-body reach also adds light coordination work, which keeps the drill mentally engaging during longer intervals.

Knee taps vs high knees — which should I do?

They sit on the same ladder. Knee taps are the controlled, low-impact rung: no airborne phase, self-paced, target-checked. High knees add flight time, impact, and sprint mechanics. Start with taps, and when a fast 60-second interval feels comfortable, the high-knee version is the natural next step.

Can I do knee taps in a small space?

Yes — the whole drill happens in your own footprint, with no travel and no jumping, which makes it one of the best hotel-room and office-break conditioning options. A minute of brisk taps every hour of desk work is a modest but genuinely useful movement habit.
