Kettlebell Swing
The kettlebell swing is a ballistic hip hinge: the bell floats to chest height powered entirely by a snap of the hips, not the arms. It trains the glutes, hamstrings, and back to produce force fast, and doubles as brutal conditioning in a very small footprint. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Intermediate — a clean unloaded hip hinge is the entry requirement.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Hinge — hips back, shins vertical, flat back — and hike the bell high between the thighs.
- Snap the hips forward hard; the bell floats up as a result, never a goal.
- Finish tall at the top: glutes squeezed, ribs down, arms relaxed like ropes.
- Let the bell swing back and wait — hinge only when the forearms touch the thighs.
- Park the bell safely on the final rep: swing it back, then set it down in front of you.
Breathing: Sharp exhale through the hip snap, inhale on the backswing; the breath matches the ballistic rhythm.

Common questions
How high should the kettlebell swing go?
Chest height is the standard hardstyle finish — the bell floats there when the hip snap is strong and the arms stay passive. Chasing overhead height with the arms adds shoulder strain, not hip power. If the bell will not reach the chest, the fix is a sharper hip drive, not a pull.
Are kettlebell swings bad for the lower back?
Swings performed with a rounded spine or a squatty pattern can aggravate backs; swings performed as a crisp hinge with a braced trunk are commonly used to strengthen the same area. Learn the unloaded hinge first, keep the backswing high between the thighs, and stop sets when the position degrades.
What kettlebell weight should I start with?
Counter-intuitively, too light teaches bad swings — a feather bell invites arm-lifting. Most men start well around 16 kg and most women around 8–12 kg, adjusted for training history. The right bell feels slightly heavy for a deadlift pattern but floats when the hips fire properly.
