Inchworm to Shoulder Taps

This inchworm variant trades the push-up for anti-rotation: at the end of each walkout you tap each shoulder with the opposite hand before walking home. It suits trainees whose planks look fine until one hand leaves the floor — which is exactly what this exposes. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Intermediate

Intermediate — the challenge is invisible from outside: keeping the pelvis dead still.

Proper form — 5 cues

  1. Walk out to a plank with the feet set slightly wider than hip-width — the wider base is your anchor.
  2. Shift weight subtly onto one hand before the other one lifts; the move starts in the trunk, not the arm.
  3. Tap the opposite shoulder lightly and return the hand without a sound.
  4. Two taps per walkout — one each side — before the hands travel back.
  5. Imagine a glass of water on your lower back for the entire tap sequence.

Breathing: Never hold the breath during taps; steady exhales with each tap keep the brace alive.

The 3 mistakes Maddy corrects most

Hips rocking side to side with each tap. The pelvis rotates instead of the trunk resisting, so the target quality is never trained. Fix: Widen the feet, slow the taps, and shift weight before lifting the hand.
Punching the taps quickly to get them over with. Speed uses momentum to skip the loaded single-arm moment that makes taps valuable. Fix: Pause a full second with the hand on the shoulder before returning it.
Shortening the walkout over the set. Fatigue quietly moves the plank position closer to the feet, easing the lever every rep. Fix: Pick a floor mark for the hands and hit it on every single walkout.

Common questions

What are shoulder taps actually training?

Anti-rotation. Lifting one hand halves your base of support, and the obliques and deep trunk muscles must stop the pelvis twisting toward the unsupported side. Stitched onto an inchworm, you get that stability work at the exact moment the trunk is already tired from the walkout.

Can beginners do this instead of the push-up version?

Often yes — taps demand control rather than pressing strength, so many beginners manage them before a clean full push-up arrives. If the hips swing on every tap, drop the knees for the tap portion only, or practise stationary shoulder taps until the pelvis stays quiet.

How many taps per walkout should I do?

Two — one per side — keeps the drill honest and the pacing sustainable. If you want more stability work, add walkout sequences rather than stacking six taps at the end of each one; long tap clusters usually degrade into hip-rocking before the set ends.
