Happy Baby Pose
Lying on your back, you draw both knees wide toward the armpits and hold the outsides of the feet, soles facing the ceiling. The position releases the glutes, groin and lower back together — a favourite finisher after leg day. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner
Beginner — a resting stretch; the towel-assisted version removes the only barrier to entry.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Keep the tailbone and lower back heavy on the mat — that is where the stretch lives.
- Hold the outer edges of the feet; use the ankles or shins if the feet are out of reach.
- Stack the ankles directly above the knees so the shins stand vertical.
- Draw the knees gently down toward the floor beside the ribs.
- Rock softly side to side if the lower back wants a massage.
Breathing: Long exhales while the knees sink — each breath out is permission for the hips to drop further.

Common questions
What is happy baby pose good for after training?
It combines three releases squats and lunges leave wanting: the inner thighs lengthen as the knees fall wide, the glutes and outer hips unload with the legs supported, and the lower back settles flat under gravity. Because the floor carries you, it works even when you are too tired to stretch actively.
I cannot reach my feet — am I doing it wrong?
Not at all; arm length, hip depth and torso proportions decide the reach, none of which are faults. Hold the ankles, the shins, or loop a towel over each sole and hold the ends. The stretch quality depends on the tailbone staying down and the knees drawing wide — not on where the hands grip.
Is this pose safe during pregnancy?
It is commonly recommended in prenatal classes precisely because it opens the hips without pressure on the belly, but bodies and pregnancies differ, and later trimesters can make flat-on-the-back positions uncomfortable or inadvisable. Clear it with your doctor or midwife, and stop if you feel dizziness or any pressure symptoms.
