Diamond Pushup (Modified)

This kneeling version keeps the triangle hand position but shortens the lever by resting the knees on the floor, cutting the load the arms must press. It is the entry point for anyone whose full diamond push-up stalls after a rep or two. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner

Beginner — the standard starting point whenever a full diamond push-up breaks form before 5 reps.

Proper form — 5 cues

  1. Set the thumb-and-index triangle under the chest, then walk the knees back until the body slopes in one line from knees to head.
  2. Cross the ankles or rest the shins flat — pick whichever keeps the hips from shifting.
  3. Lower the whole plank as one piece; the chest and hips arrive together.
  4. Bend the elbows back along the sides until the chest nearly touches the hands.
  5. Straighten the arms completely at the top of every rep — half lockouts do not count.

Breathing: Breathe in as the chest lowers toward the triangle, breathe out on the press.

The 3 mistakes Maddy corrects most

Bowing at the hips so only the chest dips. Hinging turns the exercise into a small nodding motion and removes most of the triceps work. Fix: Walk the knees further back, squeeze the glutes, and lower knees-to-head as a single line.
Hands drifting apart between reps. Once the triangle widens, the movement quietly becomes a standard kneeling push-up and the triceps emphasis disappears. Fix: Glance at the triangle at the start of each rep and reset it whenever the thumbs separate.
Craning the neck to look forward. A lifted chin strains the neck and usually drags the shoulders up toward the ears. Fix: Keep the gaze down at the floor slightly ahead of the hands, crown of the head reaching forward.

Common questions

How do I progress from kneeling to full diamond push-ups?

Work the kneeling version until you can do around fifteen strict reps, then start each set with one or two full diamond push-ups before dropping to the knees to finish. Every week, add a full rep to the front of the set. This top-down method converts kneeling volume into full reps faster than waiting until you feel ready.

Is doing push-ups from the knees cheating?

No — it is load management. Kneeling shortens the lever, which reduces the percentage of body weight your arms press, exactly the way a lighter dumbbell reduces load on a press. Choosing a version you can perform with a straight line and full range beats collapsing through partial reps of a harder one every time.

What muscles do modified diamond push-ups work?

The same ones as the full version: triceps take the lead because the narrow grip keeps the elbows tucked, the inner chest fibres and front of the shoulder assist the press, and the trunk muscles hold the knees-to-head line. Only the load changes with the kneeling base — the muscle map stays identical.
