Abs Machine
The abs machine is a seated crunch with a weight stack behind it, letting you load the rectus abdominis progressively instead of chasing ever-higher rep counts on the floor. It suits lifters who have outgrown bodyweight crunches and want measurable overload for their midsection. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

| Goal | Sets × Reps | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 4 × 4–6 (heavier, slow) | 2 min |

Level — Beginner
Beginner-friendly, but the seat and pivot setup matter — take 30 seconds to adjust before your first set.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Set the seat so the pivot of the machine lines up with your belly button, not your chest.
- Anchor your hips into the seat before the first rep and keep them planted throughout.
- Curl your ribs toward your pelvis — think of shortening the distance between them.
- Exhale hard through the crunch and hold the squeezed position for a beat.
- Resist the weight on the way back up for 2–3 seconds instead of letting it pull you open.
Breathing: Breathe out fully as you crunch down, breathe in as you return with control.

Common questions
Is the abs machine better than floor crunches?
Neither is better — they solve different problems. Floor crunches are free and always available, but progress stalls once high reps get easy. The machine lets you add weight in small steps, which is how every other muscle gets trained. A sensible plan uses the machine for loaded work and floor variations everywhere else.
Will the abs machine burn belly fat?
No exercise removes fat from one chosen spot — fat loss comes from a sustained calorie deficit, and where it leaves first is largely genetic. What the machine does do is build the muscle underneath, so when body fat comes down through diet and total training, there is visible definition waiting.
How heavy should I go on the abs machine?
Pick a weight where 9–12 slow reps with a one-second squeeze is genuinely hard by the last two reps. If your hips lift, your arms pull, or the tempo turns into a bounce, it is too heavy. The abs respond well to control; chasing stack pins usually just trains bad habits.
Why does my neck hurt on the abs machine?
Almost always because your arms and neck are doing the pulling. If you yank the handles or tuck your chin hard toward your chest, the tension moves up and out of the abs. Rest your hands lightly on the pads instead of gripping tight, keep a fist-sized gap under your chin, and think about folding your ribcage toward your hips. Drop the stack a plate or two while you regroove the pattern — the crunch should start from your midsection, not your shoulders.
How many times a week should I use the abs machine?
Two to three sessions a week is plenty when the sets are genuinely loaded. The abs recover like any other muscle, so give them at least a day between hard machine sessions and progress the weight the same way you would on a leg press. If you train abs more often, vary the stimulus — one machine day, one anti-rotation day, one endurance day — rather than repeating identical crunches daily. More is not better here; harder and fresher is.
