Abductor Machine
The abductor machine trains the gluteus medius — the muscle on the side of your hip that keeps your pelvis level every time you walk, run, or stand on one leg. It is a smart pick for beginners building hip stability and for anyone whose knees drift inward on squats. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner
Beginner-friendly — the machine fixes your position, so all you manage is tempo and range.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Sit all the way back so your hips and spine stay glued to the backrest.
- Set the pads against the outside of your knees, not your ankles.
- Push the pads apart over a full 2 seconds — no jerk off the start.
- Pause for a full second at your widest point and squeeze the side of your hips.
- Return slowly and stop just before the weight stack touches down, keeping tension.
Breathing: Exhale as you push the pads apart, inhale as you return under control.

Common questions
Does the abductor machine make your hips wider?
It develops the gluteus medius, which sits high on the side of the hip — trained consistently, it adds shape there rather than width at the hip bones themselves. Bone structure does not change with training. Most people use it for hip stability and knee tracking first, with the shape benefit coming along as a bonus.
Abductor vs adductor machine — what is the difference?
They are opposites. The abductor machine pushes the knees apart and works the outer hip (gluteus medius and minimus); the adductor machine squeezes the knees together and works the inner thigh (adductor group). A balanced leg day can include both, since they stabilise the hip from opposite sides.
How much weight should a beginner use on the abductor machine?
Start light enough that you can pause a full second at the widest position on every rep of a 12-rep set. If the pause disappears or your torso starts rocking, the weight is too heavy. Add small jumps weekly only while every rep stays smooth and controlled.
