What if I have no energy to work out? How do I train when I feel flat?

A straight answer from the exercise and low-mood support guide — evidence-based fitness education, not medical advice.

This is the most practical question in the whole subject, because low energy is not an obstacle to the plan — it is the design constraint the plan must be built around. First, reframe what a session is. On a flat day, the workout is the start. Getting changed and through the door is the hardest rep you will do; the walking that follows is easier than the starting. So we shrink the start until it is nearly free: sessions have a ten-minute floor, clothes are laid out the night before, the time is fixed in the calendar so no deciding is required, and the route or exercises are pre-chosen.

Decision-making is expensive on flat days; the protocol spends none of it. Second, use the physiology in your favour. The well-replicated pattern is that mood and perceived energy rise after moderate movement begins — the acute lift arrives during and after the session, not before it. Waiting to feel energetic before training has the sequence backwards. This is why I have clients score their mood one-to-ten before and after every session: within two weeks they hold personal, handwritten evidence that the flat feeling before a session does not predict the feeling after it.

Third, protect the pattern, not the performance. A ten-minute walk completed at your worst is worth more to the system than a perfect hour imagined. Use the never-twice rule — one missed day is noise, the day after a miss is protected — and never punish a miss with a double session, which turns training into debt collection. Fourth, check the basics that masquerade as laziness: chronic short sleep, long caffeine-fuelled afternoons, and eating far below your needs all produce the exact flatness that stops training. The TDEE calculator gives you an eating anchor; a consistent sleep window gives you back the mornings.

Finally, the honest boundary: if flatness is heavy, persistent, and indifferent to rest, routine, and sunlight — that is not a willpower problem, and it is not a coaching problem.
