I am always too tired to exercise after work — how do I actually make it happen?
A straight answer from the workplace stress and fitness guide — evidence-based fitness education, not medical advice.
First, name the kind of tired you are. After eight hours at a desk you are rarely muscularly fatigued — you are mentally drained and physiologically wound up, which feels like exhaustion but responds differently. Muscular fatigue needs rest; arousal fatigue responds remarkably well to moderate movement, which is why the burnout and stress literature keeps finding that active people report more energy, not less. The systematic review by Naczenski and colleagues linked physical activity with lower burnout risk, and trial work by Klaperski and colleagues showed regular training literally calms the body's stress reactivity over twelve weeks.
The practical problem is the gap between knowing that and getting off the sofa at 7:30 pm. Four fixes work consistently. One: remove the decision. The session goes in your calendar at a fixed time with a fixed trigger — laptop closes, shoes on, out the door within ten minutes, before the sofa enters negotiations. Motivation is not required if the sequence is automatic. Two: shrink the ask. Commit to a 20-minute minimum version, not the full session. Almost everyone who starts the minimum finishes more, but the psychological cost of starting 20 minutes is a fraction of an hour's.
Three: drop the intensity on work days. The session that fights evening exhaustion is a brisk walk, an easy circuit, or moderate lifting — hard enough to shift your state, easy enough that your tired brain does not veto it in advance. Save genuinely hard training for mornings or weekends. Four: fix the chemistry that manufactures the 7 pm crash — caffeine after 2 pm and a skipped lunch are behind more failed evening workouts than laziness ever was. Give this structure three honest weeks and the evenings usually invert: the session becomes the thing that gives you your evening back rather than the thing that costs it.
One caveat: if the tiredness is the flat, heavy kind that sleep does not touch, that has lasted weeks, and that comes with low mood or dread, stop trying to out-train it — that pattern deserves proper attention from a licensed psychiatrist or psychologist.
