Side Body Stretch
The standing side body stretch reaches one arm overhead and leans the trunk sideways, opening the lats, obliques and the deep muscle along the lower spine in one long line from hip to fingertips. It is the quickest way to unglue a torso that has been folded at a desk all day. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.
Muscles worked
Sets & reps by goal
| Goal | Sets × Reps | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 2 × 15–20 s hold per side | 10–15 s between holds |
| Muscle | 2–3 × 20–30 s hold per side | 10–15 s between holds |
| Endurance | 3 × 30–45 s hold per side | 10–15 s between holds |
Level — Beginner
Open to everyone — depth of the lean is self-selected, so it scales from stiff beginner to mobile athlete.
Proper form — 5 cues
- Stand with feet hip-width and press evenly through both feet
- Reach one arm overhead, palm facing inward
- Lean directly sideways — think of sliding between two panes of glass
- Keep both hips level; do not let the opposite hip jut out
- Breathe into the open ribcage on the stretching side
Breathing: Inhale to lengthen upward, exhale to lean a degree further sideways.

Common questions
What muscles does the side body stretch target?
It lengthens a chain rather than one muscle: the latissimus dorsi running from the arm down to the lower back, the obliques along the waist, and the quadratus lumborum deep beside the spine. Because these tissues connect, a single well-held side lean reaches all of them at once.
Is the standing side stretch safe for lower back tightness?
For most people, a gentle unloaded side lean is a comfortable way to move a stiff spine, provided you lean smoothly and avoid twisting. If you have a current back injury or any sideways movement reproduces pain, work with a qualified professional first rather than stretching into the symptom.
Can I hold something for a deeper side stretch?
Yes — clasping the wrist of the reaching arm with the free hand and adding a light pull is the classic progression, and doing the stretch beside a doorframe you can hold adds support. Increase depth through longer exhales and time, not by yanking on the arm.
