Plank Knee to Elbow Touch (Modified)

The modified knee-to-elbow plank performs the same sideways knee sweep from an easier base — hands elevated or the resting knee down — so the obliques get trained before full-plank stability exists. It is the right entry for beginners whose hips still swing in a standard plank. Coached by Maddy (NASM-CPT) — these are the exact form cues he gives on every client's first week.

Level — Beginner

Beginner — the scalable entry to oblique plank work; adjust the incline, not the movement.

Proper form — 5 cues

  1. Set your base first: hands on a bench or bottom stair, or one knee resting on the mat.
  2. Draw the free knee out and around toward the same-side elbow in a wide arc.
  3. Squeeze the side of your waist for a full second at the top of the sweep.
  4. Return the foot to its exact starting spot before any weight shifts.
  5. Swap sides evenly, keeping your hips as still as the easier base allows.

Breathing: Breathe out as the knee sweeps up, breathe in as it returns — steady and unhurried.

The 3 mistakes Maddy corrects most

Choosing a base so easy the trunk never works.. Hands on a kitchen counter with a knee down leaves almost no load, so the sweeps become leg swings with no oblique demand. Fix: Lower the incline or lift the resting knee until you feel the side abs contract on every rep — some challenge must remain.
Rotating the whole torso toward the moving knee.. Twisting the chest closes the knee-elbow gap without the obliques shortening against resistance, which defeats the drill. Fix: Keep both shoulders square to the floor and let the knee do all the travelling.
Rushing to the full version after one easy session.. The easier base builds the pattern; leaving it before hips stay level just transfers a wobble to a harder position. Fix: Progress when you can do 12 controlled reps per side with a level pelvis — then lower the incline one step at a time.

Common questions

Which modification should I pick — incline or knee-down?

The incline keeps both legs active and feels closest to the real exercise, so choose it if you have a bench, sturdy chair, or staircase available. The knee-down version needs no equipment and steadies the pelvis more, which helps if your hips swing badly. Both lead to the same place; pick the one you will actually set up and do.

Will the modified version still strengthen my obliques?

Yes. The obliques respond to tension, and the sideways knee sweep loads them at any incline — the modification changes how much bodyweight the trunk supports, not whether the target muscle works. Add the one-second squeeze at the top of each sweep and the easier base can produce surprisingly hard sets.

How long until I can do the full plank knee-to-elbow touch?

Most beginners who practise two or three times a week manage the floor version within a few weeks, but let the checkpoints decide rather than the calendar: 12 clean reps per side at your current level, hips level throughout, no wrist or shoulder complaints. Meet those, drop the incline a step, and repeat.
